PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA Initiates Umami Webinar Event; Low-salt Diet to Prevent Hypertension & Maintain a Healthy Immune System in Pregnancy in Pandemic

Jakarta - PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA in collaboration with GIZI KEBUGARAN INDONESIA held a Webinar Event: "The Role of Nutrition as a Step to Control Hypertension and Maintaining the Immune System in Pregnancy," as an effort to support mothers to stay healthy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinar shared informative facts about the usage of umami seasoning and the benefits of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

This webinar is in a series that will be held until October 2021. The number of participants for this webinar reached 944, and most of them are midwives and midwifery students from Kalimantan and Sumatra area. One of the speakers is dr. Johanes Chandrawinata, MND, SpGK, a Clinical Nutrition Specialist at Melinda Hospital Bandung.

“Hypertension is common to occur in pregnant women. The incidence of pre-eclampsia (hypertension in pregnancy) is actually higher in developing countries such as Indonesia, where the percentage is around 7-10%.” dr. Johanes stated.

According to dr. Johanes, other than controlling the intake of calories and applying a diet that increases vegetables and fish, a low-salt diet strategy is a good way to prevent the risk of hypertension in pregnancy.

“Doing a low-salt diet is also one way to prevent the emergence of degenerative diseases such as hypertension. There have been many studies on reducing sodium intake but keeping the deliciousness at the same time. For example, Halim et al in a recent study in 2020, the Journal of Food Science proved the role of MSG in maintaining the delicious taste of food even though the sodium content was reduced by between 30-60%. From this research, we can conclude that a decrease in salt intake can be achieved without having to sacrifice the taste of food by adding sufficient MSG. By the conduction of low-salt diet, pregnant women will be able to meet their balanced nutritional needs, which will also raise the chance of maintaining the immune system. The body's immune system during pregnancy is very susceptible to infectious diseases, thus pregnant women are advised to meet their nutritional needs in a balanced manner, to especially avoid COVID-19." he continue.
