Jakarta - PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA continues the commitment to support the government in protecting the environment. One of them is through the Waste Water Management Improvement program (WMI). According to the Deputy Factory Manager of PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA, Hariyono, the WMI concept is in accordance with one of the company’s global sustainability initiative to reduce global environmental damage when producing products, an effort to improve water quality in Indonesia.

Hariyono explained, the process of treating water waste is not easy. “From receiving, production process (influent), up to releasing (effluent), requires time around 10 to 12 hours and needs to operate continuously for 24 hours / day.”

“The processing of water waste into clean water is carried out at two PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA factories in Mojokerto (East Java), and Karawang (West Java). However, the Mojokerto Factory and the Karawang Factory have difference in process and capacity, because they adjust to the type of production process and also its location. Waste water from the production process enters the gathering tank and the equalization tank to adjust the concentrations of pH and other quantities of liquid. Furthermore, the pre-treatment process is carried out by adding air (aeration process) and then entering the biological de-nitrification process.”

“The results of these processes then enter the first purification / deposition process, which results in clear water but still slightly yellowish. Then enter the second purification / settling process so that the water becomes colorless. This clear water is processed again in the aeration pool before being pumped to the discharge point." he explained.

“In Mojokerto, the main production is MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and seasoning, and after all the above process done, the water is directly flowed into the Brantas River with quality standard parameters that have been set by the central and local governments. Meanwhile, in Karawang, the main production is seasoning only, and because it is located in an industrial area, the water waste does not flow directly into the river, but flows into the WWT industrial area which also follows the parameters set by the industrial area authorization," he said.

At the same time, Hariyono also ensured that PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA's waste water quality standards were always below of standard set by the central and local governments. “It takes many steps to process liquid waste into clean water, but this is what we commit to the society as a company. We always follow Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Value’s (ASV), and initiative to solve social problems and create economic value through our business activities, and will continue these initiatives in line with the business growth of the company.”

According to Luckmi Purwandari from the Director of Water Pollution Control, KLHK RI explained, in principle, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry always encourages business or industry sector and / or activities to continue to improve the performance of water pollution control in an effort to improve water quality in Indonesia. In addition, he also highly appreciates business actors and / or activities that make efforts beyond compliance with environmental regulations.

"It is hoped that business or industry sectors can understand the implementation of applicable environmental laws and regulations, especially those related to industrial wastewater management. In addition, it is also hoped that business actors / activities can share experiences and knowledge to solve problems together related to the constraints involved that have to be face in the field," she explained.
