Ajinomoto Indonesias Green Initiative Makes a Real Impact on Society

Publish with Author Ajinomoto at 13 March 2026

Based on World Bank projections, the volume of national plastic waste in 2025 is estimated to reach 9.9–12.4 million tons per year, or around 13.98% of total waste generation. Recognizing the magnitude of this challenge, the Ajinomoto Indonesia Group (Ajinomoto) believes that a clean environment is an important foundation for creating healthier families. On that basis, Ajinomoto integrates various environmental initiatives through Ajinomoto Health Provider, which is in line with the company's goal to “strengthen sustainable well-being for people, society, and the earth through AminoScience.”

Through Ajinomoto Health Provider, the company presents a range of environmental initiatives designed to have a real impact on society. Among them are innovations in more environmentally friendly packaging. In 2020, Ajinomoto implemented various breakthroughs such as the use of recycled materials with mono-material packaging, as well as reducing packaging thickness to minimize the use of plastic in some of our products.

Ajinomoto became the first company to use MSG product packaging containing paper by introducing AJI-NO-MOTO® Paper Packaging, which replaces some of the plastic material with paper, thereby reducing plastic use by up to 30%. For other products such as Masako®, the implementation of the “No Inner Plastic” movement and the reduction of header parts has saved 8.4% in plastic use. Meanwhile, the innovation of Sajiku® mono-material packaging has resulted in a 9.5% reduction in plastic use per package.

Overall, these various packaging innovations have enabled Ajinomoto to reduce plastic use by 1,736 tons by 2025, a significant contribution to supporting national efforts to reduce plastic waste. This initiative also demonstrates Ajinomoto's commitment to complying with the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry regulation (P.75/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/10/2019) and supporting the target of reducing plastic by 30% by 2029/2030.

Ajinomoto continues to expand its sustainability impact through collaborations with startups, such as Rekosistem, which provides waste station facilities operating in Surabaya and Mojokerto, making it easier for the community to deposit their sorted waste.

In addition to providing waste management infrastructure, Ajinomoto also collaborates with various waste banks, such as Bank Sampah Gunung Emas (East Jakarta), Bank Sampah Induk Patriot Bekasi, Karawang, Mojokerto, and Surabaya, as well as TPS 3R in the Karawang and Mojokerto areas. This collaboration is carried out to strengthen community-based waste management. From all these initiatives, Ajinomoto successfully handled 352 tons of waste throughout 2025. The presence of these facilities not only helps the environment but also opens up economic opportunities for some communities through waste collection schemes.

Ajinomoto realizes that education is an important part of the success of this sustainability program. Through the Berseri (Clean and Healthy Country) program, it carries out its main objectives of collecting multilayer plastic (MLP) waste and Greenducation. To raise awareness about waste sorting, Ajinomoto has launched Greenducation in East Jakarta, Bekasi, and Karawang to increase public awareness about the importance of separating plastic waste from other types of waste so that it does not pollute the environment and can be recycled to produce more useful products.

Over the course of a year, the program has educated 2,400 participants from communities, schools, and food stalls about the impact of waste sorting, while also providing drop boxes to make it easier for warteg partners, small shop, and other small businesses to deposit their Ajinomoto packaging.

Ajinomoto not only targets the community but also improves environmental literacy for employees as part of their role as Ajinomoto Health Providers. The Greenducation program is also implemented nationwide. This education covers waste sorting into three categories: organic, inorganic, and residual, as well as the provision of drop box facilities to instill the habit of sorting waste in the work environment.

"To prepare for a better Indonesia, we continue to expand the impact of Ajinomoto Health Provider not only through education on balanced nutrition, but also through the formation of wiser and more responsible waste management habits. We hope this initiative can contribute to realizing a cleaner and healthier Indonesia. Ajinomoto also hopes that this series of programs can have a real impact, encourage more responsible behavior, and inspire more parties to bring about sustainable innovation and collaboration," said Grant Senjaya, Head of Corporate Communication - PT Ajinomoto Indonesia.
