Ajinomotos Active Role to Contributes for Creating Better Quality Air in Indonesia

Publish with Author Ajinomoto at 26 June 2025

Jakarta, June 2025 – Air quality issues are still one of the major environmental pollution issues in Indonesia besides plastic waste, food waste, and waste management. Based on the IQAir 2024 World Air Quality report released in March 2025, Indonesia is ranked 15th as the country with the highest level of air pollution in the world, with PM2.5 (particulate matter) concentrations reaching 35.5 μg per cubic meter.

To support the creation of cleaner air and a healthier environment in Indonesia, the Ajinomoto Indonesia Group presents the Ajinomoto Health Provider initiative. This initiative is part of Ajinomoto's integrated sustainability commitment, which focuses not only on improving human health, but also the health of the earth. One form of real contribution to the environment is through active support for Net Zero Emission (NZE) efforts, including reducing carbon emissions in the Ajinomoto factory areas located in Mojokerto and Karawang.

The Ajinomoto factory in Mojokerto no longer uses coal as fuel for boiler engines. As a step towards more environmentally friendly operations, the fuel has been replaced with biomass derived from agricultural waste, which produces much lower emissions than coal. In addition, Ajinomoto factories in Mojokerto and Karawang also strengthen the use of renewable energy through cooperation with PT PLN (Persero) by utilizing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) as evidence that PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA pays more attention to environmentally friendly sources.

"Our Group of Companies has an initiative (Ajinomoto Health Provider) in supporting health for the earth (environment). One aspect is the Nett Zero Emission (NZE) activity or carbon emission reduction. Until now, we have succeeded in reducing the amount of carbon emission waste by 223.2 kTCO2/year vs fiscal year 2018. The largest source is obtained from the use of New Renewable Energy (EBT) biomass, which completely replaces coal as fuel for our boiler engines," said Samsul Bakhri, Director - PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA.

"Then, another source of our NZE activities is obtained from the use of solar panels which started in 2022 and until now we have increased the number of solar panels in the Mojokerto and Karawang Factories. In total, we have currently applied 3.61 MWP of solar panels. There is also the use of certified electricity (Renewable Energy Certificate-REC) which is more environmentally friendly, the result of collaboration with PT PLN (Persero), where the use of this environmentally friendly electricity is also carried out in our two factories. So, from EBT sourced from environmentally friendly electricity (REC) and solar panels if converted, we have succeeded in reducing the amount of carbon emissions by 90 k.tons, until fiscal year 2024. As a form of contribution to maintaining the sustainability and health of the earth (environment), as well as overcoming human nutrition and health problems, the Ajinomoto Indonesia Group has formulated a new philosophy by positioning itself as a company that has a goal: "Strengthening sustainable welfare for humans, society, and the earth through AminoScience". This goal is set as proof of the Ajinomoto Indonesia Group's commitment to strengthening the welfare of all Indonesian people, and also contributing to strengthening environmental sustainability, through AminoScience continuously," he continued.

Director of PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA and Head of Karawang Factory, Jasman Silalahi, said that in addition to being committed to Net Zero Emission (NZE) activities to reduce carbon emissions, the Ajinomoto Indonesia Group also continues to encourage the creation of more environmentally friendly businesses. These efforts are realized through reducing the use of plastic in a number of product lines, strengthening the management and recycling of plastic waste through collaboration with start-up companies and community organizations around the operational area, and implementing circular economic practices as part of a sustainability strategy.

"To create a more environmentally friendly business, in addition to reducing carbon emissions, we also make several efforts to reduce plastic use, including the MSG AJI-NO-MOTO® innovation by launching paper packaging products that can help reduce plastic materials by up to 30%, then through the Masako® brand we reduce the use of plastic in the header part and eliminate inner part plastic, and the use of mono-material packaging that only uses 1 type of material, making it easier to recycle. Then we also collaborate with companies that provide plastic waste collection and management services (Rekosistem), MSMEs that provide waste management facilities (TPS3R), and waste bank facilities located around the company environment. Even, as a form of "Agent Health Provider" we invite and promotes employees to collect packaging waste from Ajinomoto products, in order to encourage the collection, management, and recycling of plastic waste in Indonesia," said Jasman Silalahi, Director - PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA

“At the Ajinomoto factory, we also implement circular economic practices by processing by-products from the MSG manufacturing process into co-products that have greater economic value in the community, for example, the AJIFOL product, the content of which is useful for fertilizing plants, and the FML product as additional nutrition for livestock. Molasses (from sugarcane plants) is our main ingredient for producing AJI-NO-MOTO® MSG, while livestock meat (beef, chicken) is our main ingredient for producing Masako®. So our co-products also contribute to us in providing quality Ajinomoto raw materials. Well, we call this cycle of activity the Ajinomoto bio-cycle," he continued. Coinciding with World Environment Day which is always celebrated in June. Ajinomoto wants to invite all Indonesian people to contribute to preserving the environment, which can start from things that are close to our daily lives, such as sorting plastic waste in places that have been provided, so that they can help related parties in the management and recycling process.

Through the contribution of Health Provider, Ajinomoto hopes to inspire many parties to carry out other movements aimed at increasing public awareness to implement a healthy lifestyle with family, while continuing to preserve the environment. Ajinomoto is committed to continuing to make positive contributions to society, by extending the healthy life expectancy of Indonesian families through high-quality products and services, and creating environmentally friendly businesses.
